As lifetime employment at a single company becomes a thing of the past, employers have to work more diligently to maintain employee loyalty and retain top talent. Here are 4 key ways to maintain your top talent in 2013.

1. Invest more time in the hiring process. Hiring can be a strenuous and exhausting process, however taking the time to find the right person to fill a roll in your organization can lead to less time and money spent onthe retention of the same person. Finding the right match between a candidate and your organization can easily pay off in the long run.
2. Make your employees marketable. Maintaining the working relationship between you and your employees is crucial. However, maintaining employee skills (and thus marketability) for both their day-to-day function and their general industry knowledge also plays a key role. This helps employees progress in their career path, and helps your organization place current employees in existing positions within the organization.
3. Allow many paths to promotion. Since employee needs are constantly changing, allowing employees to pick their career path, and hone their skills accordingly is hugely valuable to your company and to employeesthemselves. This flexibility not only allows them to advance as desired, but it will also increase their willingness to stay with your organization and grow into different roles over a longer period of time. Offering rewards for longevity and loyalty can be key. Rewards and recognition for these types of milestones can be small but effective in communicating to employees that their organization appreciates their time and investment to shared goals.
4. Empower employees to make choices. Give employees the trust and empowerment to make choices on the job, it will pay off. Employees grow more easily into greater roles and responsibilities when employers give them the ability to make their own choices in the workplace. This kind of decision-making power shows employees that the organization has trust and faith in their abilities, which is when employees feel the greatest loyalty to their organizations.
